Cork Terrarium

First we will cut the wooden body of the terrarium to size. Start by measuring and marking a 3/4" wooden plank to the desired length. To add character to our terrarium we chose to use recycled barn wood and made it 28" in length. With your plank clamped, cut along the marked line using your Dremel Saw-Max™ tool and SM500 Wood & Plastic Wheel accessory.

Create a hole that will be used to hang the terrarium upon its completion. We marked ours 1" down from the top center of the wooden plank. Mount the 150 Drill Bit accessory in your Dremel 3000 rotary tool. Set the tool speed to 10 and plunge through the marked location to create the hole.

Carve a fun design into the wooden face of the terrarium. We chose to carve the inspirational word "GROW" into ours. For complicated designs it may be helpful to print out a guide or mark the wooden plank before carving. Use your 3000 rotary tool with a 191 High Speed Cutter accessory to carve the intended design. We recommend setting the tool speed to 10 when completing this step.

Bore wells into each cork for the succulent plants to rest in. Our corks were 1 3/4" tall and we made each well approximately 3/4" deep and 3/8" in diameter. Secure the corks in a vice then bore the wells using your 3000 rotary tool and a 194 High Speed Cutter accessory. For best results, keep your tool speed at 10 and work slowly when boring the wells.

Layout and affix the corks to the wooden plank. There are several ways to accomplish this. We decided to give our terrarium a sense of spontaneity by spacing our corks varying distances from each other. However you choose to design yours, be sure to leave room above each cork well to allow space for the succulents to grow. To affix the corks to the wooden plank we hammered a 1 1/2" finishing nail through the base of each cork into the plank.

Finally, plant your succulents into each cork well with a pinch of dirt and hang the completed terrarium. We fed a 4' piece of jute twine through the hole drilled in Step 2 to hang our terrarium.
